What is a prisoners' cantina?

The cantinas at the prisons supply for the prisoners and prison guards at the IPS facilities different products for personal consumption to improve their wellbeing.

The cantina alignment is based mainly on a staff that serves in the IPS and operates two alignments of cantinas:

-          a prisoners' cantina (17 cantinas)

-          a prison guards' cantina (11 cantinas)

Purchasing products at the prisoners' cantina is a privilege that can be granted and revoked according to the rules of the system.

The prisoners' cantina sells 2 product categories:

-          Continuously available products, such as: food products, cosmetics, writing supplies, personal products (not including fresh meat, fruits and vegetables).

-          Preordered products, such as: board games, books, creative supplies, religious equipment, magazines etc.

All products sold at the cantina are kosher, and carry a stamp testifying to this.

The purchasing sums allowed at the prisoners' cantinas are:

-          non-employed prisoners – 870 NIS.

-          Prisoners employed in maintenance – 990 NIS.

-          Prisoners employed in manufacturing – 1,120 NIS.

On Rosh Ha'Shana and Passover, an additional purchase of 200 NIS is allowed for each group, accordingly.

Payment: the prisoners have a monetary right to purchase (according to a sum deposited in his name and in accordance with the approved purchasing ceiling).
This balance is updated by the unit's budgeter prior to every sale, and if necessary – during the sale. As a rule – it is forbidden to sell anything in the prisoners' cantina in exchange for cash or any other form of payment.

Selling: the selling at the prisoners' cantina usually takes place between 2 and 3 times a months, i.e. once in the first half of the month and once in the second half.
The purchasing of the items takes place on the day assigned for it, at the cantina window.
After the purchasing the computer issues a receipt for the prisoner, and he signs off for the items he had purchased.
