A "closed" visitation – a visitation that takes place in the visitation room when a net or a glass plate separates the prisoner from the visitors.

An "open" visitation – a visitation that is held in the visitation room or in some cases under a roof in an appropriate location, with no dividing net between the prisoner and the visitors.
