Service Workers

Community service is a way of serving one's sentence through working for the benefit of the general public, during which the convicted felon sleeps in his own home, but is subjected to various limitations.

This punishment is easier than actual imprisonment, and it enables the existence of less crowded prisons.

Community service is an alternative to the punishment of actual imprisonment and is given as a privilege to the accused person, on order to prevent his stay behind bars.

This privilege is not given to the accused person unconditionally. It can be revoked at any point, should the defendant fail to fulfill his commitments in order to exercise this privilege.

An accused person who wishes to serve his sentence by means of community service must take upon himself a burden of responsibility that accompanies this special punishment, and perform his duties according to the instructions of his supervisors, without digressing or violating the rules.

Community service was instilled in Israel in 1987.

The judge may convert, in his sentence, the penalty of imprisonment to community service, only for persons sentenced to no more than 6 months.

For the purposes of criminal registration, a period of community service counts as an imprisonment.
